1. A Postdoctoral Position

A Postdoctoral Research Associate position is available in the Fall 2009 to investigate hydrophobic behavior at nanoscale and its application to biosensors and drug delivery. Candidates should have prior Ph.D. or postdoctoral experience preferably in physical chemistry of surface phenomena, surface modification and analysis, nanofluidics. Good written and communication skills are required. Familiarity with cell biochemistry, optical microscopy, electrochemistry, and scanning probe microscopy is a plus. The initial appointment is for one year with the possibility of renewal for two years.

Interested candidates should send a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and three letters of reference to:

Dr. S. Smirnov
Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry
New Mexico State University
MSC 3C, P.O. Box 30001
Las Cruces, NM 88003

or email to

Applications will be considered until the position is filled, but interested candidates are encouraged to write by July 1, 2009. NMSU is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity employer.

2. Graduate Student Positions

Two Graduate Research Assistant positions are available for the projects : 1) new methods for cytosolic drug delivery; 2) nanoporous optical and electrical biosensensors; 3) molecular electronics: electrical properties of single molecules and molecular assemblies using STM and AFM. All projects can be taylored to physical chemistry, analytical chemistry, chemical engineering or biochemistry students. The last one is probably more suited for a physical chemistry student.

Interested candidates should submit an application to the graduate school at NMSU and contact Dr. S.Smirnov at

3. Undergraduate Student Positions

One student aid position is available immediately to investigate surface binding of biomolecules for applications in biosensors and drug delivery. Work study, RISE and MARC students are particularly welcomed. Students from Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering and Electrical Engineering are welcomed. Interested candidates should contact Dr. S.Smirnov at
