The Electronics Repair Shop has provided repair of laboratory instruments for the past 15 years. It offers extensive support and repair services to students, faculty, and staff of the New Mexico State University. Its technicians are experienced with many brands of instruments. In this period of time the shop has been involved with literally thousands of problems facing the staff of Chemical, Physics, Biological, Agronomy, and Soil Sciences, a wealth of experience which is invaluable to various departments. When a repair problem arises, the supervisor and his staff can quickly analyze and usually repair the problem in a minimum amount of time. In addition, the shop has a stock of parts needed for common repairs. This again will help shorten the down time of a specific instrument. If it works with electrons we can help you with it. Describe repair/work on the Work Sheet.
The Electronics Repair Shop is responsible for the maintenance, repair and calibration of a wide variety of equipment. From appliances like hot plates and stirrers to computers, printers and the Chemistry Department's analytical instruments. If it works with electrons we can help you with it.
We are equipped to trouble shoot analog and digital circuits to the component level. We can also assist you with the set-up and operation of instruments and systems.
One of the most important tools we use is the Service Manual. We recommend, that when you purchase a new or used instrument, you insist that the manual is part of the purchase agreement. We can work with just a schematic diagram if a service manual is not available. A large collection of instrument manuals is maintained in the Electronic Shop. A manual purchased after the sale of an instrument can be costly. Some of the Electronics Shop's test equipment and tools are available for use in your lab on a short-term basis. All equipment and tool must be checked out.
Consult with scientists regarding large instrument repair and installation as well as designing very specialized instruments. Consult with faculty and students regarding proper use of instruments. Maintain and calibrate specialized instruments in the teaching laboratories. Consult with faculty regarding the proper instrument to purchase for a particular requirement. Assist the staff in the repair of electronic problems.
In addition to the above mentioned services, the shop supervisor works closely with the department's electronic technician. This interaction benefits the repair shop user in that they receive the most modern modifications and/or repair. Repair for balances, centrifuges, and autoclaves are generally handled by outside contractors.
Turn-around on repair work is generally 1 to 3 business days depending on workload. Since there are many different system configurations, some parts require ordering after a problem is diagnosed, which usually takes from 2 to 4 business days for delivery. You will be called when the work has been completed, and can pick up your instrument
Rates: Labor rate is $10 per hour with a 1/2-hour minimum. The minimum in no way implies that initial problem diagnosis or any work subsequently required will be completed within a particular time period. Further, it may not be possible to provide an accurate prior estimate. Customers may request that they be contacted after one hour of labor has been spent before any further work is done. Certain long term projects may also be contracted by the project.
