Location and Use -- The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry has installed six Trilogy PDL 3000 keyless locks for security and tracking purposes. The locks are located are all located in building 95. There are four in biochemical laboratories and one for the new instrument laboratory. Critical research experiments in W365 and W366 require limited access for the main entrances and for the emergency egress at W364. The egress lock prevents entrance but not exit. The large molecular biology laboratory W357 requires security. All locks allow tracking. Only the new instrument lab tracks uses from the main entrance, W186. The emergency egress exit from W188 is not restricted but entrance is limited to researchers in W186. No locks have been programmed to require both proximity (proxy) card and/or key code entry. The following table summarized the location and users of the locks.
The combination lock at the left is used for the microscopy and tissue lab in chemistry building 95 room W357J, access only through Barbara Lyons research group.
How to Use a Proximity (Poroxy Card II)
The HID Corporation makes proxy cards. They are programmed locally with the number of the card and the user or group name associated with each card. As the name implies there is not need to swipe the card but just hold it flat in front of the black portion of a lock and the lock will allow entrance for a valid proxy card. The lock's LED flashes green twice and the lock opens for 5 seconds. The cards are not affected by magnetic fields. They may be stored and used from a billfold or kept on a clip to the user's clothing. The are white with blue identification and are shown above in the picture; they are on the table below the lock. Each card weighs 8 grams and is 1.6 mm thick by 87 mm long and 54 mm wide, similar to a credit card.
The keypad on each lock is only for administrative purposes, e. g. lock manager, lock supervisors, emergency services, and the locksmith shop.
All proxy cards are activated in room 230 by Keith. Proxy cards prepared for Molecular Biology are distributed and supervised by the secretary in W362 and by the departmental secretaries for the Graduate Reading Room.
Administration
Tools -- The system of locks is administrated using a Trilogy Proxy Card Reader/Enroller [shown at the left] and a Trilogy Data Transfer Module2 (DTM) [shown below on the right] from two computer using Alarm Locks' DL Windows software.
Once a proxy card has been programmed the data is transferred to the lock with the DTM. A data base of the locks, users, and a data trail is maintained on both computers. A list of user names with Proxy Card numbers, and user numbers is also maintained under Keyless_Locks.XLS.
Exception -- All locks are programmed to stay closed unless accessed with a Proxy Card, except for the lock on W357 in molecular biology. The W357 lock is programmed be open from 8 AM to 5 PM weekdays and closed all other times, including the official university holidays. Off hours access is only by Proxy Card.
