Care of Spectrophotometric Cells

Spectrophotometric cells  must be handled properly if reliable results are to be obtained. The following are rules:

1. Inspect the cell faces for scratches. Never touch the optical surface of cells with your fingers

2. Either use a single cell for an entire series of measurements, or assure that all cells use are matched.

3. When filling cells, rinse them thoroughly with the solution to be measured. Fill assuring that no air bubbles adhere to the window. Wipe the outside of the cell with isopropanol or ethanol and a Kimwipe. Never use a paper towel.

4. Place cells into the instrument carefully, assuring that they are properly seated in the cell holder. Use the same cell orientation for each measurement.

5. If a volatile solvent is being used, place a cover on the cell to reduce evaporation.

6. Never store solutions in cells. Rinse cells thoroughly when finished and allow to dry in a dust-free environment. Basic solution are especialy likely to etch cells if they are not properly cleaned.

7. Always keep cell in a proper holder if they are not in use.
