Chelators for Environmental Applications

• Remediation of transuranic waste (Plutonium processing)
• Water soluble chelators for soil washing and decontamination
• Selective extractants for actinides-Calixarenes
• Polymeric chelators for radioactive waste stream remediation using ultrafiltration
• Selective separation of cesium and strontium from spent nuclear fuel rods
• Chelators for use in supercritical carbon dioxide (Argonne National Lab collaboration)

 

Chelators for Biomedical Applications

• Develop chelators for in-vivo removal of excess Fe3+ for treatment of Cooley's anemia (therapeutic applications)
• Understand the mechanism for siderophore mediated transport of Fe3+ across the cell membrane in bacteria and other systems
• Development of diagnostic agents such as contrast agents for magnetic resonance imaging

                      

Ligand Development

• Develop convenient methodology for the preparation of useful metal ion binding systems
• Develop practical tethering technology for attachment of ligands to useful platforms
